Character & Studies

Moar stuff! Here's another character commission for a friend of mine over on dA, had a lot of fun with that one, crazy aliens with energy wings are always good! And then another chunk of figure/portrait studies, gotta get that draftsmanship up! Gonna try and keep cranking out as much of that kinda stuff as I can in between all the other mountains of work.

Cheerio!

Quick studies

Here's a couple quick studies, figures and environments! Just the usual practice to keep the ol drawing arm in shape, really trying to focus on my gesture and foreshortening with the figure stuff. All between 2 and 10 minutes.

Figures

And here's some figure studies done for our figure construction classes with Ron Lemen this semester, which I'm super stroked for. I love his animator's approach to figure drawing and I know later on he's going to get in to really solid and accurate anatomy, I feel like by the end of this semester my figure game's gonna be way above where it was. Excite!

Cheers!

Figure Drawing - 6-15-11

Here's some sketches from a surprise figure session we had yesterday, starting off with gestures and then doing specific studies of hands, feet, legs, and head. It was definitely helpful and showed me a few key weak areas in my figure drawing, so I'm looking forward to starting my Bridgman rampage next week and fixing them and hopefully by the end of next semester I'll be able to draw a near-professional figure from imagination, just in time for character design class.

Figures & Sketching

Here's today's shenanigans, making some more interesting stuff to go along with those figure couples I posted a couple days ago. I started with the rendered ideal male dude, and I wanted to do one like that for all 6 characters, but I think it'll take too long to be able to turn it in on time, so I'm gonna do more gesture sheets like the second image for the other ones and maybe do some rendered versions if there's time. I think I made some good progress on learning how to wedge forms with these though, feeling much more confident about things.

And then the bird lady is just a random in-between-things sketch that I kinda liked.

Figure Drawings - 5-20-11

Here's some more figure stuff for fun and learning. The first page of torsos and arms is imagined except for flexing biceps guy in the middle, I was trying to work out how to interlock all the muscles of the armpit and outer side of the arm. I think the drawing in the upper right is coming pretty close. The other page is just 2 minute gesture drawings from photos of people jumping, which we spent an hour on in figure class this week, it was pretty fun, hah. Plus two random comp studies of Frank Brangwynn.

Figure Drawings - 5-17-11

Here's some figure work from today, some gestures and a refined-ish figure, all from observation. I'm feeling pretty good about these for the most part, the fleshed figure was the first drawing I've done where I really felt like I understood what was going on, notably in the arms and legs.

We had our last day studying muscles in Figure class today, and it seems like everything's starting to click. We're gonna be studying motion next, so hopefully these figures'll start to take on some life! And then this semester will be over, which is horrifying cause I'm pretty sure it just started yesterday, hah.

Figure Drawings

Here's some stuff from today's life drawing session, all 6 minutes or less. This is probably the best I've done as far as life drawing goes to date. In addition to anatomy, we've been studying comic book artists and animators in figure class, learning about how gesture, momentum and weight should affect our drawings if we really want to make our figures come alive.

We did some studies from Lil' Abner and Skydoll getting a feel for how gesture works on simplified characters and it really changed my way of thinking, and I think it really helped my figure drawing. Gonna keep practicing skeletons and studying bridgman and anatomy and all that good stuff; way excited to see what the next few months shall bring.
