Dead Dudes and Figures

Aight, here's some more stuff. It is with somewhat sorrowful but also not really and kinda excited feelings that I've decided to relinquish my 'updating daily' title. It's obviously been untrue for a little while now and with half of our classes being mostly unpostable work for now I just dunno if I can keep it up. So I'll probably switch to updating once or twice a week with two or three higher quality images. I think ultimately it'll be a good switch, you'll get higher quality work in larger chunks, I'll get to stop freaking out over not having to update and losing sleep feeling obligated to update before bed. :D

SO with that out of the way, here's some frikkin art.

This one's an ink drawing I did of a grim reaper type dude, which ended up being pretty interesting. We had an art show at the ATX Pod last Friday with the Vigil studios and students were allowed to put one piece in the show, I was swamped with homework and didn't plan to put anything in but on that Thursday I got some free time, so I started thumbnailing this guy at 11 in the morning, spent an hour and a half buying bristol and a frame at like noon, and then worked on it until like 12 literally while we were tearing down the studio for the show, haha. And rather spiffily it actually sold the next day, first showpiece evar! Aww yeah.

And this second one is just a 3hr figure drawing done during Saturday's session. Just messin with pastels and having fun, not much to it. :D

Peace out yo!

Character Commission - Freetrick

Here's an ink character commission for Daniel Bensen over on dA, of his necromancer character Freetrick. This is gonna be taken one step further to add in some digital color washes, but personally I enjoy the look of the straight ink, mushy water media shapes are so cool to look at. I think my favorite area is the black magic in the lower left, lots of cool semi-accidental markmaking going on.

Ranger Sketch

Here's a drawing I did today as an example for some character commissions which I'm offering over on dA. If you care, feel free to check 'em out: [Link]

After doing some character thumbnails, little 2-inch doodles in my sketchbork, I worked up this pencil sketch, just getting everything set in place and making sure the character is looking how I want it.

After I was happy with the sketch, I went in with some dip pens and sumi ink and lined the whole thing, clarifying some stuff and adding additional details here and there. I prefer dip pens to standard pens simply for the added line variety you can get out of them.

After the lines were done I pulled out my trusty brush and a cup of water and went over the whole thing with thinned down sumi ink washes. This is probably my favorite step, I always love adding tone and wet media makes such gorgeous abstract shapes. Plus this reminds me of the B&W drawings found in game manuals which I just love.

And finally I went in and did some digital color washes in painter, just to spruce it up a bit and play off the lovely stuff made in the ink washes.

Movie Still Studies

More composition exercises, taking movie stills and doing quick thumbnail studies of them. Very good exercise to learn a bunch of different ways to crop or place your viewpoint, as well as see how one shot will progress to the next one.

These are all about 1.5"x4", 10-20 minutes each, and all but the top left are done with a dip pen, brush, sumi ink, and FW acrylic white ink. Very fun combination for doing quick studies!
