Ponies, Purification and Studies

Yikes, been a while since my last update! Alas, but here is some stuff regardless!
These first couple are some recent finished works; the cultist burning one for a client on dA and the merpony the result of a hilarious bet/dare/collab between me and another artist. She did the drawing and I painted it. Needless to say, my little pony + mermaid = win.

Then these here are just a couple studies, the first to try and practice more deliberate markmaking and lost edges, and the second to get a feel for drawing birds which I'll be using in a future piece.

And lastly here's a bundle of sketches, these are mostly studies from photos. I'm trying to better understand costuming and design and also improve my line quality; killing two birds with one stone! These are also a ton of fun to do, and don't take much time, so I think I'm gonna start making it a point to do these daily, cause I can already see them improving my work. Fun fun!

And that's all for now, thanks for looking! More to come soon!

Sketchdump, figures and robots

Been a while since a good ol' sketchdump and I just finished up my (rather crappy) second sketchbook! So it seems like an ample opportunity to dump le` sketches. Mostly a shenanigan of studies, cloth, figures, hands, thumbnails, a train, and some other funstuffs.
Then this here is a WIP painting for our figure painting class which I may or may not have time to finish (derp), but I like where it's going at least.

And lastly here's a painted-over 3d render of mah robot for Industrial Design class. Could probably still use some more detail, but I like how it's lookin', again may or may not have time to polish it further.

Been crazy busy with work lately, so updates may  be sparse, but I'm gonna try and get more in to studies so those should get tossed up decently often.

Have a good one!

D&D Character Concept WIP

Here's some more work on my D&D character, I finished writing up his backstory and am trying to work out his design. Still got a lot of work to do on the armor, but I think it's going in a good direction, just need to keep exploring until I can find the right shapes to get him feeling right.

Looking forward to painting this dude! It might take a while what with all the usual homework, but I want to get it to a finished level at some point, we shall see.

D&D Character Concept Sketches

Not too much to show today, but here's some sketches for the design of my character in the D&D group we started up at the Austin POD.

He's a deva cleric that I'm thinking is going to have been betrayed and abandoned his divine ways and turned to a darker path, which should provide some interesting visual opposites in shape language, which is what the little comparisons at the bottom are for.

I'd like to design and draw this guy out really well, so this might be a project I work on for the next month or so until reaching a finished illustration, but maybe it won't take that long, we'll see how much work on it free time will allow, hehe.

Still got a lot of work to do on him obviously, these are just basic ideas, need to do lots more thumbnails and iterations and experimenting until I find the right mix of things, but it should be a lot of fun. One of the nice things about playing D&D is that it's a game, but half of it is doing concept work, so I can totally say that it's productive, pwnage.

Sketchbook - 8-13-11

Didn't do too much today except for work on my ortho some more and that would seem to be a bit redundant, so here's some sketchbookings that I hadn't posted yet from the workshop. Some figure drawings, portraits of fellow students, and Bridgman hand studies... and random centaur guy.

On a random note, I found drawing the slightly heavier girl on this page to be rather fun, you can really see the forms and how they overlap and squash & stretch and things of that nature. Supermodel girls are great, but it's fun to get a different variety of body types from time to time. And in other news, I really need to practice hands. Will get on that... In the name of art!

Sketchbook - 7-20-11

Another workshop update! Still going strong, keeping busy and having a blast. This second week has been heavily focused on entertainment design so far, so the instructors, mainly Jason Manley, have been giving a lot of good info about the industry and how the process goes for making games. It's pretty interesting, and has got me thinking about careers and such and if concept art is really what I want to do; there's so much cool stuff in art that it's hard to choose, I'll probably talk with the instructors this week and see what's up.

But anyways, arts! Not too much to say about these, the first is just a flock of sketches and figure drawings that I've been doing over the past few days. The zombies near the end are some initial sketches for our second assignment, which is also a character design assignment.

Then this one is just a quick speedpainting done of my view out of the KC pod while waiting for a lecture to start, messing around with some more direct painting and economic brush work.

Ciao!

Workshop and Sketches

Hot diggity dog an update! I've been super busy with everything lately and haven't had much time to update, which will probably be the case for the next couple weeks while the TAD workshop is going on, and after that normal daily posting will resume and I'll try to update as much as I can in the meantime.

I'll try and talk a bit about the workshop in later posts when I have more time to update, cause so far it's been awesome, there's a ton of great people here and as always the information the instructors are presenting is great. We've had crits, lectures and demos from John English, George Pratt, Ted Kinsella, Andrea Wicklund from Valve, Brent Watkinson, Anita Kunz, Francis Vallejo, Jon Foster, Marshall Vandruff, and Ron and Vanessa Lemen so far with plenty more on the way. Maybe when I've got more time I'll take a week to just recap what went on during the workshop, we'll see. Below is a pic of Vanessa Lemen starting an oil demo.

And since it's nice to see some art on art blogs, here's some of the things I've been up to lately. Some sketches from life drawing and imagination, which I'm feeling very happy with, I think my drawing is taking a turn for the better.

Hope ya dig it, have a good one! Regular updates shall return soon!

Sketchbook - 6-11-11

Here's some sketchbook shenanigans. Figure doodles, gestures, turnarounds, naga guys, movement studies, a weird ice castle thing, and some Zerg as a result of playing SC2 today.

Not much to report otherwise, took my first day off in a long time today so that was pretty fun. Looking forward to summer break, planning to do a bunch of bridgman studies, as well as some animal and environment studies. The goal for this summer is to try and get my drawing skills at a similar level as my painting skills, we'll see how that goes.

Little Nemo Sketches

Here's a couple sketches for our final Visual Narrative project, which is a 4-page comic based off of Winsor McKay's comic strip Little Nemo in Slumberland.

I've got my story all written out so it's time to get working on all the character designs and start on the final pages. Should be a lot of fun!

Watercolor Sketches

Here's some sketching done today for school and fun. The abstract thumbnails on the left are just trying to get some compositional ideas for our final project in composition class, which will be a final piece based on the theme "dreamtellers".

The figure drawing is just cause I was having fun with the watercolor and felt like painting something quick, I think it's one of my better attempts with watercolor, which I want to experiment with more, especially after looking at some of Edmund Dulac's work today.

Thanks again to watchstock on dA for the reference.

WIP Oil Portrait & Sketches

What do you mean I forgot to update yesterday? Preposterous!

Ok maaaaybe I missed it, had a pretty weird day, pretty much all our scheduled classes didn't happen and we were gonna pull an all nighter but I didn't so everything was crazy and I forgot but that's ok. To make up for it, here's a double dose of stuff!

First off here's a work-in-progress of a remake of Monday's oil portrait, I spent a lot more time working on the drawing and focused much more on trying to render the forms accurately, it made a big difference and I think it's much better in terms of handling color and temperature. Gonna go back in to it tomorrow probably and add the bangles and jangles and all that business, should be pretty fun!

And secondly here's some random sketches and scribbles from the good ol' sketchbook. It's been a while since I've just chilled out and drawn like this, been so busy working on full-on homework stuff, but this was really fun and quite relaxing so I'm gonna try and make it a point to spend 30 mins or an hour a day just sketching for fun.
