Lady Sanguine + Warmup

Here's a personal piece I just finished to add to the ol' portfolio. I had the idea for the headdress and kind of built the rest of the character around it, pretty pleased with the outcome! I tried a new process of jumping straight in to color rather than doing value and adding color on top, which was a lot of fun, definitely gonna stick with that method for future pieces.

Then here is a gif showing the process of creating the piece, and a warmup character I did experimenting with a little bit more of a stylized direction, inspired by Torchlight 2 concepts.

Thanks for looking!

Aliens, portraits and a gypsy

My my, November already! Next thing you know it it'll be December and the world will end, just when I finally learned to tap-dance too! (I do not know how to tap dance)
Oh well, here's some artwork to look at instead. The first is a commission for a friend on dA, had a lot of fun with the slimy skin on that one! The second is a portrait I started for practice but it ended up getting a little more finished. I don't think I'm quite done with it yet, still have some things  to touch up and tweak, but it might be a while before I get to it.

Then these two are some photo studies; the left one is a friend of mine who made a super awesome costume that I just had to paint, and the portraits are studies of some famous people and a random lady from google, need to keep working on my portraiture. If you can guess them all you'll get a private tap-dance lesson! (You will not get a private tap-dance lesson)

And that's it for now, thanks for looking and happy Thanksgiving! :)

Ponies, Purification and Studies

Yikes, been a while since my last update! Alas, but here is some stuff regardless!
These first couple are some recent finished works; the cultist burning one for a client on dA and the merpony the result of a hilarious bet/dare/collab between me and another artist. She did the drawing and I painted it. Needless to say, my little pony + mermaid = win.

Then these here are just a couple studies, the first to try and practice more deliberate markmaking and lost edges, and the second to get a feel for drawing birds which I'll be using in a future piece.

And lastly here's a bundle of sketches, these are mostly studies from photos. I'm trying to better understand costuming and design and also improve my line quality; killing two birds with one stone! These are also a ton of fun to do, and don't take much time, so I think I'm gonna start making it a point to do these daily, cause I can already see them improving my work. Fun fun!

And that's all for now, thanks for looking! More to come soon!

Character & Studies

Moar stuff! Here's another character commission for a friend of mine over on dA, had a lot of fun with that one, crazy aliens with energy wings are always good! And then another chunk of figure/portrait studies, gotta get that draftsmanship up! Gonna try and keep cranking out as much of that kinda stuff as I can in between all the other mountains of work.

Cheerio!

Quick studies

Here's a couple quick studies, figures and environments! Just the usual practice to keep the ol drawing arm in shape, really trying to focus on my gesture and foreshortening with the figure stuff. All between 2 and 10 minutes.

Old and New

Got a metric bundle of images for today! They say it's never too late to fix a mistake in your piece; well how about a year and a half later? The first piece here, floaty space lady, was a piece I did back in January of 2011 and it's stuck around as a favorite since then, but had some pretty glaring errors, so this week I went back in and revamped it, fixed some stuff and brought it up to snuff! Was an interesting experience to see how differently I paint now. And the second one, demon bro, was a 'gah I can't draw!' doodle that ended up being worth finishing, so that was fun! It's probably not a good thing that horrific face-eating demons are the things that most readily emerge from my subconscious, but oh well.

Then these two here are another couple character commissions for the lovely folks on dA, I think these two are some of my favorites so far! The water on the first one was a blast to do.

And to finish it off here's some sketches and studies. The first one a quick still life that I just had an idea for and had to get out of my system, the second the obligatory figure study (this time in oil!) and the third a quick study of the lovely Colorado National Monument, which used to be only like 20 minutes away from my house. Fun times!

And that's all for now, thanks for looking! There will be blood... I mean more, more artwork... and probably some blood involved in the process of making it. Cheerio!

Hand studies!

A batch of hand studies; the left 4 from Sargent and the right 4 from Bouguereau. Done to keep the ol' drawing arm in practice and get some more subtlety to my hands; I feel like I've understood their structure for a while but mine always came out feeling rigid and constructed, doing these is definitely helping understand the subtlety and rhythm they have, and how to portray it without rendering each and every plane which makes them look overdone.

Anywho, lots more of these to come! Cheerio!

Characters and Figures

Art! Gaggles of it! Here's the stuff I've been doing recently, the characters below are illustrations for commissions I'm offering over on dA. The first one was done for fun as an example, and the following ones are the commissions themselves. Having a lot of fun with these and enjoying rendering new kinds of surfaces; always fun to have a go at someone else's character that's different from what you usually do!

And these two are a couple figure studies, trying to focus on subtle color and edge control mostly, which has been a lot of fun. I'm currently working on a similar one in oil that hopefully should be postable next week or so, we shall see!

And that concludes the month of July! Stay tuned for more!

Besketchings!

Good golly, it's been a downright while since I updated, things have been crazy busy lately! I've been working on a project that I'm really excited to share but it's still NDA for now, so hopefully soon I can start showing stuff! In the meantime, here's all the new stuff that's been mulling about waiting to get posted!

Here's two are figure paintings done in Ron Lemen's figure construction class, pretty happy with how they turned out!

And these are a set of figure drawings done from pixelovely, gotta keep the ol' drawing arm in practice!

Some various portrait studies from movie stills, around 20 or 30 minutes each, except for the top middle which was probably a couple hours.

And lastly, anyone remember this guy? He's the first part of a very lengthy series I want to do that I'll probably spread out over the coming months to gauge my progress in terms of drawing, dynamic posing and design. Props if you recognize him!

And that's all for now! More to come, and more frequently! Cheers!

Well of Souls

Here's a piece done for our illustration class as well as the Diablo 3 Portrait of a Champion art contest.

Had a ton of fun working on this and I think it's a benchmark for my work in terms of complexity!

Will post up a walkthrough soon.

Cheers!

Figures & Thumbnails

Then here's about a 2 hour figure painting done from life- we're going to start focusing a lot more on using oils in our figure sessions at the studio, I'm pretty stoked! I think this first one came out pretty good- still need to work on my construction and ability to render form with paint, but I think these are some of the best fleshtones I've done in oil.

Then this one is about an hour long plein-air painting I did a month or two ago; I was trying to capture the glow of the sun which didn't quite work out but there's parts of it that are working pretty well for a quick sketch.

And then these last two are some thumbnail development for the group IP we've been working on in class, doing character and environment design. I think the Victorian Teslas are some of my better character concepts, need to keep cranking out a ton of these thumbnails to keep working on my design sensibilities. Lots of fun!

Pyromancer

Da trees, da trees, da trees are on fire!

Been sitting on this one for a while, finally got some time to polish it off and clean up the last few things it needed to finish it.
It was an assignment for our Illustration class, where we did faux magic cards.

Pretty happy with how this turned out overall, though I definitely see some areas I went wrong and where I would do things differently next time, feeling some breakthroughs coming in my work. :)

Hope ya dig!

Figure Studies - 3.19.2012

Keeping on trucking, trying to get my figure game up! This first one was just a painting study that ended up getting fairly refined.

And then these are a lot of torso studies with some arms and hands sprinkled in. Gonna try and fill up my sketchbook with these babies!

Figures and magic!

Here's some more recent work, this one's a figure painting I did today for fun and to experiment a little bit with digital markmaking, trying to get a more oily, painterly quality to my work. I had a lot of fun with the process and like how it turned out, so I'm probably gonna apply this to my next illustration. Excited!

And then here's some more good ol' constructive figure drawing; still focusing on simplifying the human form and observing it in rhythms as well as form. Learning a ton from these and they're a lot of fun to do!

And lastly here's the thumbs for an upcoming piece; this one's a faux Magic the Gathering card for our Illustration class. Super excited for this one! I'm probably going to roll with either #1 or #5. Will update this one soon!

Figures

And here's some figure studies done for our figure construction classes with Ron Lemen this semester, which I'm super stroked for. I love his animator's approach to figure drawing and I know later on he's going to get in to really solid and accurate anatomy, I feel like by the end of this semester my figure game's gonna be way above where it was. Excite!

Cheers!

Parish Sketch

Here's a quick sketch (about 1.5 hours) I did last night as a live painting at the Art Seen Alliance event that happened at the Parish down in Austin. Was a lot of fun, and my first time painting live, it's pretty thrilling to try and progress a painting and make it look good at every stage while still making adjustments that are big enough to be interesting to people. There were about 4 of us there that swapped out using the projector every half hour or so. Lots of fun!

Cultist and Cast

Then here's a cultist done for our first assignment at the TAD winter workshop, this one was directed by Jason Manley and Paul Steed, everyone gathered together and we put together a sweet post-apocalyptic universe and designed characters to fit in to it. I got the cultist character, which was right up my alley!

And lastly here's a WIP early start of a digital cast painting that I'm doing for fun, cause I love modeling form and digital is much faster than filling in a bazillion tiny holes with charcoal (which I'll do again sometime in the future). Hooray painting!
